The CONTRA 30 is ORBITAL's compact CESE (Conventional Early Streamer Emission) active lightning rod. Featuring a direct mast-mount base with integrated threaded connection, the CONTRA 30 is designed for installations where minimal footprint and fast deployment are priorities — telecom masts, rooftop equipment platforms, temporary structures and retrofit installations.

With a certified ΔT of 30µs and 200kA current withstanding, the CONTRA 30 provides full NFC 17-102 compliant active protection across all four protection levels. Its compact cylindrical body and threaded base allow direct mounting onto standard mast sections without additional hardware.

The CONTRA 30 requires no external power source, no batteries and no electronic control unit. It is entirely autonomous — once correctly installed, it operates indefinitely with only periodic inspection. All components are manufactured from 304L inox stainless steel, ensuring reliable performance in marine, industrial and tropical environments.

Independent certification: The CONTRA 30's ΔT value was verified by METU (Middle East Technical University) laboratory — an accredited NFC 17-102 test facility. Current withstanding tests conducted at HIZAL Lightning Test Lab. Full test reports available on request. Contact ORBITAL →

ΔT = 30µs — Compact CESE
Initiates its upward leader 30 microseconds earlier than a passive rod under identical conditions — translating directly into a strong protection radius per NFC 17-102.
🔋
Fully Autonomous — Zero Power Required
No batteries, no external power, no electronic components. Powered entirely by the atmospheric electric field of the approaching storm.
🏗️
200kA Current Withstanding
Tested to 200kA — double the NFC 17-102 minimum of 100kA. Full safety margin for rare high-energy strike events.
🔬
Field-Testable with ORB-ONE
Function verifiable in the field using the ORBITAL ORB-ONE ESE Test Unit — essential for NFC 17-102 maintenance compliance without dismantling the installation.

Protection radius Rp calculated per NFC 17-102 formula: Rp = √[h(2r − h) + ΔT(2r + ΔT)]
h = mast height above structure · r = standard radius per level · ΔT = 30µs (CONTRA certified value)

107m is the maximum protection radius recognised under NFC 17-102 regardless of calculated value. For project-specific calculations use the ORBITAL Risk Calculator or contact our engineers.

Mast Positioning
Install the CONTRA 30 at the highest structural point on a dedicated mast. The lightning rod tip must be at minimum 2m above all protected elements — roof-mounted equipment, parapets and any conductive protrusions. ORBITAL recommends 4–6m mast height for most installations to maximise Rp. Refer to the protection radius table for the exact Rp value at your chosen height.
Down Conductors
Minimum 50mm² copper or 70mm² aluminium. Route as vertically as possible — no horizontal runs exceeding 0.5m. Bond to any metallic structural element within 1m of the conductor path to prevent side flashes. Install a test joint at ground level on each conductor for earthing resistance measurement. Minimum 2 down conductors required for buildings over 20m height or 25m perimeter.
Earthing System
Target resistance: ≤10Ω per IEC 62305-3. Measure with an earth resistance tester before commissioning. For rocky, sandy or dry soils where this target cannot be met with standard rods, use ORBetter® Earthing Enhancement Compound to reduce contact resistance. Install additional electrodes in a radial configuration if required.
Strike Counter & Testing
NFC 17-102 requires a strike counter on each down conductor for maintenance record documentation. Commission the installation using the ORB-ONE ESE Test Unit to verify CONTRA 30 function before handover. Document test results for the installation file.
1
Position mast — minimum 2m above all protected elements
Verify coverage radius covers full structure footprint using the Rp formula or Risk Calculator.
2
Install minimum 2 down conductors — 50mm² copper
Route vertically, bond to structural metalwork, add test joint at base of each conductor.
3
Verify earthing resistance ≤10Ω
Measure before commissioning. Add electrodes or ORBetter® compound if target not reached.
4
Install VIRTU strike counter on each down conductor
Required for NFC 17-102 compliance and maintenance documentation.
5
Commission with ORB-ONE test unit & document
Verify CONTRA 30 function, record results. Complete the installation file with all test certificates.
