ORBITAL copper wires are the preferred down conductor material for lightning protection systems. Per IEC 62305-3, down conductors must have a minimum cross-section of 50mm² for copper — the stranded and solid round variants in this range meet and exceed this requirement. Copper's combination of high conductivity, corrosion resistance and workability makes it the standard choice for down conductor installations worldwide.

Four conductor types are available to suit different installation requirements: stranded electrolytic copper for flexible routing, bare solid round for direct burial, PVC insulated stranded for installations requiring electrical isolation from structural elements, and PVC covered solid round for general purpose down conductor use.

Routing the Down Conductor
Route down conductors as vertically as possible — avoid horizontal runs exceeding 0.5m. Fix to the structure at maximum 1m intervals. Bend radii must not be less than 200mm to avoid inductance increases. Route away from doors, windows and occupied areas where possible.
Cut End Protection
If a rod must be cut to length, apply a corrosion-resistant compound to the cut end to seal the exposed steel core. The threaded ends are protected by the thread profile itself, but cut ends are vulnerable to accelerated corrosion if left unprotected in aggressive soils.
Earthing Resistance Target
Protect the bottom 2m of the down conductor with a mechanical guard tube where it is exposed at or near ground level. Connect the lower end of the down conductor to the earth electrode via the test joint clamp using an appropriate exothermic weld or listed mechanical connector.
