Copper bonded earth rods combine a high-strength steel core with a 254µm electrolytic copper bonding layer. The copper layer provides the electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of copper while the steel core provides the mechanical strength needed for driving into hard soils without deformation. The result is a rod that matches solid copper for electrical performance at significantly lower cost.

The 254µm copper bonding thickness exceeds the 250µm minimum specified by IEC 62561, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance and compliance with all relevant standards. All rods are threaded for coupling — multiple rods can be joined end-to-end for deep-driven installations.

Applications
Primary UseEarth termination system for lightning protection systems
Advantage vs Solid CopperLower cost, higher mechanical strength — suitable for hard and rocky soils
Soil SuitabilityAll soil types — use with ORBetter® in high-resistivity soils
Driving the Rod
Drive vertically using a driving cap that protects the thread. The steel core of copper bonded rods provides superior resistance to bending during driving compared to solid copper — making them the preferred choice in hard or gravelly soils. Drive to the required depth and verify the thread is undamaged before coupling.
Cut End Protection
If a rod must be cut to length, apply a corrosion-resistant compound to the cut end to seal the exposed steel core. The threaded ends are protected by the thread profile itself, but cut ends are vulnerable to accelerated corrosion if left unprotected in aggressive soils.
Earthing Resistance Target
Target ≤10Ω per IEC 62305-3. Measure before backfilling. For high-resistivity soils use ORBetter® Earthing Enhancement Compound. Install parallel rods at minimum 2× rod length spacing if the target cannot be met with a single rod.
