The ORB-X is ORBITAL's dedicated test unit for lightning strike counters. Periodic verification that strike counters are functioning correctly is a maintenance requirement under NFC 17-102 — the ORB-X makes this quick and reliable without needing to remove the counter from installation.

The ORB-X applies a precisely calibrated simulated trigger pulse to the counter mechanism. If the counter is functioning correctly, it increments by one count in response — confirming the counting mechanism, display and electrical connections are all working as intended.

Compatible with all ORBITAL counters in the VIRTU andSTELLAR series. If a counter shows no response to the ORB-X test, it should be replaced and the finding documented. The ORB-X test result should be recorded at each periodic inspection as part of the NFC 17-102 maintenance log.

How to Test

Connect the ORB-X test leads to the counter terminals on the installed counter. Activate the unit — if the counter increments by exactly 1, the counter is functioning correctly. No increment or erratic behaviour indicates a fault.

Test Frequency

Test all counters at every scheduled maintenance inspection — minimum annually per NFC 17-102, or after any significant storm event. If a counter reading has increased since the last inspection, verify function is still correct with the ORB-X.

Documentation

Record the test date, result and counter reading in the installation maintenance log. A failed counter must be replaced before the next storm season — document the failure and replacement in the maintenance file.
