ORBITAL's aluminium and stainless steel earthing rod range covers all non-copper earth electrode requirements. Stainless steel rods are the preferred choice where corrosion resistance is critical — marine environments, acidic soils and installations where long service life without inspection is required. Aluminium rods offer a lightweight alternative for applications where weight and ease of handling are priorities. Galvanized steel rods provide an economical solution where soil conditions are less aggressive.

The range is organised into four product types to cover the full range of installation methods and soil conditions. All rods are supplied with thread profiles compatible with ORBITAL couplers for deep-driven installations.

Material Selection
Select the rod material based on soil conditions and required service life. Stainless steel is preferred for marine, coastal and chemically aggressive soils. Aluminium should not be used in alkaline soils. Galvanized steel is acceptable in neutral soils but has a shorter service life than stainless in aggressive conditions.
Driving and Coupling
Drive rods vertically using a driving cap that protects the thread profile. For wedge-drive rods, use the appropriate wedge tool. Couple rods end-to-end using ORBITAL couplers when greater depth is required. Ensure thread engagement is complete before continuing to drive.
Earthing Resistance Target
Target ≤10Ω per IEC 62305-3. Measure before backfilling. For high-resistivity soils use ORBetter® Earthing Enhancement Compound. Add parallel rods spaced at minimum 2× rod length apart if the target is not met with a single rod.
Dissimilar Metal Precaution
Do not connect aluminium rods directly to copper conductors — galvanic corrosion will occur at the joint. Use stainless steel or galvanized clamps as intermediate connectors, or select copper-compatible rod types for copper earthing systems.
