The ORB-ONE is ORBITAL's handheld test unit for ESE active lightning rods. Under NFC 17-102, periodic verification of ESE lightning rod function is a mandatory maintenance requirement — and the ORB-ONE makes this fast, simple and safe without requiring the lightning rod to be removed from its installation.

To test, the technician connects the ORB-ONE directly to the ESE lightning rod via the included cable and activates the unit. A precisely controlled test signal is applied and the lightning rod's response is read immediately. Three LED indicators display the result: Power (unit active), Active (lightning rod functioning correctly), or Defective (lightning rod requires inspection or replacement).

The ORB-ONE is compatible with all ORBITAL ESE lightning rods — HELIA, COMET, ZERU and CONTRA series. Its ergonomic pistol-grip design allows single-person operation at height. Test results must be recorded in the installation maintenance log as part of NFC 17-102 compliance documentation.

How to Test

Connect the ORB-ONE cable to the ESE lightning rod test socket. Activate the unit — the Power LED confirms the ORB-ONE is ready. The Active LED lights if the lightning rod is functioning correctly. If the Defective LED lights, the lightning rod requires inspection or replacement.

Test Frequency

NFC 17-102 requires lightning rod function verification after every recorded lightning strike and at regular periodic intervals. ORBITAL recommends annual testing as a minimum, or after any storm event that has triggered the strike counter.

Documentation

Record the test date, result and tester serial number in the installation maintenance log. A defective result must be documented and the lightning rod replaced before the next storm season.
