Solid copper earth rods are the highest-conductivity option for earth electrode systems. Unlike copper-bonded steel rods, solid copper rods provide uniform conductivity throughout their cross-section — there is no steel core and no risk of delamination or galvanic corrosion at cut ends or threaded joints. ORBITAL solid copper earth rods are manufactured from 99.9% electrolytic copper and are fully compatible with all copper earthing system components.

ORBITAL offers solid copper earth rods in two diameters: Ø16mm for standard lightning protection earthing installations per IEC 62305 and EN 50164, and Ø10mm for smaller installations or supplementary electrodes. All rods are threaded at both ends for coupling — multiple rods can be joined end-to-end for deep-driven installations where greater depth is required to achieve the target earthing resistance.

Soil SuitabilityAll soil types — for high-resistivity soils use with ORBetter® compound
Driving the Rod
Earth rods should be driven vertically into undisturbed soil using a driving head that protects the threads. Drive to the required depth — typically 1.5m minimum for a single rod, with additional rods coupled as needed. The top of the rod should be accessible for the earth connection and future resistance measurement.
Coupling for Deep Installations
Use ORBITAL couplers (OLT-060) to join rods end-to-end when greater depth is required. This avoids the need to remove and re-drive the rod. Ensure thread engagement is complete and the joint is tight before continuing to drive. Coupled installations should be continuous electrical copper from top to bottom.
Earthing Resistance Target
Per IEC 62305-3, each earth electrode must achieve ≤10Ω measured resistance. Measure with a calibrated earth resistance tester before backfilling. If the target cannot be reached with a single rod, add parallel rods spaced at minimum 2× rod length apart. For rocky or sandy soils, use ORBetter® Earthing Enhancement Compound to reduce contact resistance.
Conductor Connection
Connect the earth conductor to the rod using a listed earth clamp. Use a test joint (disconnecting link) to allow future resistance measurement without disturbing the installation. The connection point should be accessible — install in an earthing pit if buried.
