ORBITAL inox stainless steel wires are the preferred down conductor choice for lightning protection installations in marine, offshore, coastal and chemically aggressive environments. Where copper conductors would suffer accelerated corrosion or where regulations prohibit copper, stainless steel provides a durable, long-service-life alternative that fully complies with IEC 62305-3 requirements for down conductors.

Available in six cross-sections from 7mm to 13mm, the range covers the full spectrum of down conductor requirements from single lightning rod residential installations to multi-conductor industrial systems. All variants are manufactured from 304/316 grade stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance.

Down Conductor Routing
Route as vertically as possible — avoid horizontal runs exceeding 0.5m. Fix with stainless steel saddles and fixings compatible with 304/316 grade steel. Avoid contact with dissimilar metals in wet conditions to prevent galvanic corrosion at fixing points.
Cut End Protection
If a rod must be cut to length, apply a corrosion-resistant compound to the cut end to seal the exposed steel core. The threaded ends are protected by the thread profile itself, but cut ends are vulnerable to accelerated corrosion if left unprotected in aggressive soils.
Earthing Resistance Target
Install test joint at approximately 0.5m above ground level on each down conductor. Protect lower 2m with a mechanical guard tube. Connect to earth electrode using stainless steel compatible exothermic weld or listed mechanical connector.
