ORBITAL couplers are the connecting hardware that completes a deep-driven earth rod installation. They connect rods end-to-end for deep installations, connect rods to tape conductors, and connect rods to cable/wire conductors at the surface. Selecting the correct coupler type and material is important for long-term joint integrity — a corroded or loose coupler joint can significantly increase earthing resistance over time.

Gunmetal (bronze alloy) couplers are the standard recommendation for copper rod systems — excellent conductivity, corrosion resistance and compatibility with copper. Stainless steel couplers are used with stainless steel rod systems. Aluminium and galvanized steel couplers are available as lightweight or economical options for compatible rod materials.

Applications
Primary UseEarth termination system for lightning protection systems
Advantage vs Solid CopperLower cost, higher mechanical strength — suitable for hard and rocky soils
Soil SuitabilityAll soil types — use with ORBetter® in high-resistivity soils
Rod-to-Rod Coupling
Thread the coupler fully onto the end of the first rod before driving. Drive the first rod until only the coupler protrudes. Thread the second rod into the coupler, ensuring full thread engagement. Continue driving. Do not use impact force on the coupler body — drive only on the rod.
Cut End Protection
If a rod must be cut to length, apply a corrosion-resistant compound to the cut end to seal the exposed steel core. The threaded ends are protected by the thread profile itself, but cut ends are vulnerable to accelerated corrosion if left unprotected in aggressive soils.
Earthing Resistance Target
Match coupler material to rod material to prevent galvanic corrosion at the joint. Gunmetal is compatible with copper; stainless steel with stainless steel; galvanized with galvanized. Check all threaded joints for full engagement before backfilling — a partial thread connection will fail under driving forces or current events.
